Elections

Primary vs General Elections

A primary election is held by political parties to choose their nominees for the November general election. In a primary, Republicans run against Republicans, Democrats run against Democrats, and candidates from other qualifying parties run against members of their own party. Voters may only vote within one party section on the primary ballot and cannot “split their ticket.”

A general election is held between each party’s nominees and any independent candidates. The candidates who receive the most votes are elected to office. Statewide ballot proposals also appear on the general election ballot.
